Codex for teams: plans, pricing and how teams share it
Codex comes with every ChatGPT seat now. What each plan gives a team, what teammates can share, and what they can't.
Codex is included in every ChatGPT plan as of October 2026, and for a team it usually means ChatGPT Business: standard seats cost $20 a month billed annually or $25 monthly, and premium seats, with five times the Codex usage and no five-hour limit, cost $100 or $125. Business needs at least two seats; Enterprise and Edu are priced by contract with pooled credits. Teams can also run Codex with an API key and pay per token, though cloud tasks then aren't available. OpenAI puts typical Codex spend at about $100 to $200 per developer a month. Teammates can share read-only snapshots of a Codex thread, but no plan lets two people work in the same session.
Key takeaways
- Business standard seats are $20 to $25 and premium seats $100 to $125, with five times the Codex and Work usage and no five-hour limit. Two seats minimum; up to 200 for workspaces created since August 24, 2026.
- Codex Cloud comes with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Signing in with an API key gives the CLI, SDK and IDE extension, without cloud tasks.
- Limits are per person and vary by model: a standard seat gets roughly 15 to 150 GPT-6 Sol messages every five hours.
- Threads can be shared as read-only snapshots, and Slack hands work to Codex under the requester's own account. Nobody shares a live session.
| Option | Price | Codex usage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20 a month | Five-hour limits by model; Codex Cloud | One person |
| Pro | $100, $200 or $500 a month | No five-hour limit | One heavy user |
| Business, standard seat | $20 a seat billed annually, $25 monthly | Same estimates as Plus | Teams of 2 to 200 |
| Business, premium seat | $100 a seat billed annually, $125 monthly | 5x standard, no five-hour limit | Heavy users on a team |
| Enterprise or Edu | By contract, with pooled credits | Scales with credits | Large organizations |
| API key | Per token, e.g. GPT-6.1 Sol $2 / $10, GPT-6 Luna $0.10 / $0.50 | No cloud tasks | CI, or no seats |
| Poly | Free start; $20 or $50 a month per person who runs the AI | 200 or 500 credits | A group in one shared session |

What does a ChatGPT Business seat include for Codex?
- ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex in both seat types. Work is OpenAI's agent mode for long tasks that end in documents, decks, sheets or sites, and it shares Codex's usage pool. GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna run in Work and Codex, not in regular chat.
- Premium seats add five times the Work and Codex usage, no five-hour limit, and always-on agents.
- Everywhere Codex runs: the ChatGPT desktop app, the CLI, the IDE extension, the web and iOS.
- Team integrations: code review on GitHub pull requests, with
@codex reviewor automatically (GitLab is in preview), Linear, and Slack through @ChatGPT. - Admin: SAML SSO, MFA, managed configuration policies, Codex access tokens, model defaults and spend controls; extra usage comes from pooled workspace credits. OpenAI doesn't train on workspace data.
Enterprise adds role-based access, SCIM, encryption key management, an analytics dashboard and API, a Compliance API and Codex Security.
How much Codex usage does a seat get?
OpenAI's estimates for local messages every five hours, on Plus and a Business standard seat, by model:
- GPT-6 Astra: 5 to 45.
- GPT-6.1 Sol: 15 to 160 (OpenAI's Business page lists 15 to 150).
- GPT-6 Sol: 15 to 150.
- GPT-6 Luna: 350 to 3,000.
Weekly limits may also apply, and cloud tasks use more. Fast mode spends the allowance at 2.5 times the rate and Astra Ultrafast at 8 times. Plus and Pro users can buy extra credits, and Business owners buy them for the whole workspace (OpenAI).
How do teams share Codex work?
- Thread snapshots. Since August 20, 2026, the Mac app can share a Codex thread as a read-only snapshot: anyone with the link on personal accounts, or your workspace or invited people on workspace accounts, which admins can switch off. It includes messages, reasoning summaries, images and diffs, leaves out tool calls and shell commands, and redacts known secret patterns. Recipients can't fork or continue it; they can attach it to a new thread.
- Shared cloud environments. A workspace can publish an environment everyone's cloud tasks use.
- Slack. Mention @ChatGPT in a thread to hand repository work to Codex Cloud. Follow-ups from the same account continue the task; another person may start a separate task, and only the requester can follow along (OpenAI).
- Code review. Codex reviews pull requests on GitHub for the whole team.
Can two people work in the same Codex session?
No. As of October 5, 2026, no ChatGPT plan lets two people steer one Codex session. Codex's "collaboration mode" is a setting for how the agent works with one person, such as plan mode, not a way to add a second person; What is Codex collaboration mode? explains it. Teams that want several people in one session run Codex inside a shared room.
Where does Poly fit?
Poly (usepoly.co) runs the real Codex for GPT and Grok turns, and Claude Code for Claude, Kimi and Muse, in a sandbox inside a browser room. Everyone in the room watches one timeline, any member can approve a change before it happens, and each turn's receipt names who ran it and what it cost. Nobody needs a ChatGPT seat: the people who run the AI pay $20 or $50 a month, and everyone else watches, chats and approves for free.
For one developer who uses Codex all day, a ChatGPT seat's allowance goes further than Poly's credits. Poly is for the work a group does together. The Claude side of the same question is in Claude Code for teams, and the two plans are compared in ChatGPT Business vs Claude Team.
Which option fits your team?
- Two to 200 people who each use Codex: Business, on standard seats, with premium seats for heavy users.
- One person who uses it all day: Pro.
- A large organization that needs SCIM, audit and analytics: Enterprise.
- CI, or no seats at all: an API key, without cloud tasks.
- A group, including people who don't code, steering one session together: Poly.
Common questions
Is Codex included in ChatGPT Business?
Yes. Both Business seat types include Codex and ChatGPT Work. Standard seats are $20 a month billed annually or $25 monthly; premium seats, with five times the usage and no five-hour limit, are $100 or $125.
How much is Codex for a team of five?
On Business standard seats, $125 a month billed monthly, or $100 a month billed annually. Premium seats for all five are $625 a month, or $500 billed annually. Extra usage comes from pooled workspace credits.
Can I use Codex with an API key instead of a seat?
Yes, in the CLI, SDK and IDE extension, paying per token. Cloud features such as Codex Cloud tasks need a ChatGPT plan.
Can teammates continue my Codex thread?
No. A shared Codex thread is a read-only snapshot; teammates can view it or attach it to a new thread of their own, but not continue it.
