Comparison
Claude Max vs Pro: what the extra $80 or $180 buys
Almost all of the difference is how much you can use. The three other differences, what stays the same, and when Max pays for itself.
Claude Max costs $100 or $200 a month against Pro's $20 ($17 billed annually), and almost all of the difference is usage: Max 5x gives five times Pro's allowance per five-hour session and Max 20x twenty times. Anthropic's plan comparison shows only three other differences: Max gets priority access at busy times, can use the Fable models for up to half its weekly limit instead of paying for them in usage credits, and is billed monthly only. Claude Code, Opus, Claude in Chrome, Research, Memory, Projects and the rest are included on both, and Anthropic publishes no message count for either plan.
Key takeaways
- Price: Pro is $20 a month, or $17 billed annually. Max 5x is $100 and Max 20x $200, monthly only.
- Usage: five or twenty times Pro's per-session allowance. Both plans also have weekly limits, and chat and Claude Code share them.
- Fable: included on Max, up to half the weekly limit. On Pro it runs on usage credits.
- Same on both: Claude Code, Opus and Sonnet, Claude in Chrome, Claude Design, Research, Memory, Projects, Skills, connectors and a context window of up to 1 million tokens.
- Rule of thumb: if you regularly spend more than $80 a month on usage credits on top of Pro, Max 5x costs the same and gives far more room.

How much more usage does Claude Max give?
Anthropic doesn't publish message counts. Its pricing page says there's "no fixed message count," and gives only ratios: Pro has at least five times the free plan's usage per five-hour session, and Max has five or twenty times Pro's (Anthropic).
- Session limit: resets every five hours. Max multiplies it by 5 or 20.
- Weekly limit: applies on both, across all models; Anthropic doesn't publish a multiple for it.
- One pool: chat, Claude Code and Cowork draw on the same limits.
How far a session goes depends on the model, the length of your conversations and the files involved; Opus uses more than Sonnet. Details in Claude Code usage limits.
What else does Max include?
- Priority access at high traffic times, a "Yes" for Max and "No" for Pro in Anthropic's comparison table. (An older Pro help article still lists priority access; the current pricing table doesn't.)
- Fable 5 and 5.1 as part of the plan, for up to half your weekly limit. Anthropic notes this isn't extra allowance: "you can never use more than your weekly limit" (Anthropic). On Pro, Fable runs on usage credits from the first request.
- Monthly API credits, rolling out from October 2026: $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x, for building on Anthropic's API (Anthropic).
- Higher output limits and early access to advanced features, listed on the Max plan card without figures.
What's the same on Pro and Max?
Anthropic's comparison table marks these the same on both:
- Claude Code, in the terminal, editors, desktop app, web and phone, including cloud sessions and projects.
- Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, with a context window of up to 1 million tokens depending on the model.
- Claude in Chrome, Claude for Microsoft 365, Claude Design, Slides and Docs.
- Research, Memory, Projects, Skills and connectors.
- Usage credits, at API rates, to keep going past your limits; fast mode runs only on credits on both.
Neither can share projects or use Claude Tag; those need Team or Enterprise.
Is Claude Max worth it?
It depends on how often you hit Pro's limits.
- Rarely: stay on Pro, and turn on usage credits for the odd overflow.
- Most days, or you pay more than about $80 a month in credits: Max 5x.
- All day, especially with Claude Code on a large codebase: Max 20x.
Anthropic's own framing: Pro is "for everyday work" and Max "for people who work with Claude all day." On its Claude Code page, Pro is for "short coding sprints in small codebases" and Max for "everyday use in larger codebases."
How do you switch between Pro and Max?
In Settings > Billing, choose Manage subscription. Upgrades take effect right away and are prorated for the rest of the billing cycle; downgrades take effect at the end of the current period. Max has no annual billing, and Anthropic says it offers no standard discounts on any paid plan (Anthropic). Prices are set in local currency in some regions.
What about Team, or ChatGPT?
- Claude Team premium seats, at $100 or $125, give 6.25 times Pro's per-session allowance, plus admin controls and shared projects, for 2 to 150 people (Claude Team vs Enterprise).
- ChatGPT Pro costs $100, $200 or $500 and has no five-hour limit for Codex (ChatGPT Plus vs Pro).
Working with Claude as a group
Max and Pro are personal plans: Anthropic's terms don't allow sharing an account. For a group that wants to work with Claude together, Poly (usepoly.co) is a browser room where everyone sees the same conversation live and any member can approve a change before the AI makes it. Free to start. What is Poly?
