ChatGPT Plus vs Pro: what $100, $200 or $500 buys, especially for Codex

Pro is three plans now. What each one adds over Plus, what Codex users actually get, and what OpenAI does and doesn't publish about the limits.

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and Pro comes in three tiers, $100, $200 and $500, all billed monthly. Pro gives more usage of every model, GPT-6 Pro reasoning in chat, larger context windows (128K against 54K for instant answers, 400K against 256K for reasoning), unlimited image creation, Dots (OpenAI's always-on agents), and no five-hour limit in Codex. The tiers differ mostly in how much you can use: OpenAI says the $500 tier gives 25 times Plus's allowance and is the only one with Ultrafast, and doesn't publish a multiple for the $100 and $200 tiers.

Key takeaways

  • Price: Plus $20. Pro $100, $200 or $500. No annual billing on either.
  • Codex: Plus has a five-hour limit (for example 15 to 160 local messages with GPT-6.1 Sol); Pro has none, only its larger allowance. Both share that allowance with ChatGPT Work.
  • Chat: Pro adds GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro reasoning, and unlimited use of the GPT-5.6 models within abuse guardrails.
  • Pro 200 changed: new Pro 200 subscriptions since September 29 get a lower allowance than before; earlier subscribers keep the old one through October 29, 2026.
  • Ultrafast, up to eight times faster in Codex, is on Pro 500 only and uses the allowance eight times as fast.

What's the difference between ChatGPT Plus and Pro?

Rows that differ on OpenAI's pricing page (OpenAI):

  • The GPT-6 models (6.1 Sol, Astra, Sol, Luna): "Yes" on Plus, "Expanded" on Pro.
  • GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna: "Yes" on Plus, "Unlimited" on Pro, subject to abuse guardrails.
  • GPT-5.6 Sol Pro: Pro only. OpenAI's Pro card adds "Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra," shown in chat as GPT-6 Pro.
  • Context window: 54K on Plus and 128K on Pro for instant answers; 256K and 400K for reasoning.
  • Codex: "Yes" against "Expanded."
  • Dots, OpenAI's always-on agents announced at DevDay on September 29: Pro only.
  • Voice: "Expanded" against "Unlimited."

Both include ChatGPT Work, deep research, image generation, memory, projects, scheduled tasks and the option to opt out of training. GPT-6 Pro has its own weekly limit even on Pro (OpenAI).

What do the $100, $200 and $500 Pro tiers get?

From OpenAI's Pro help page (OpenAI):

  • Pro 100 ($100) and Pro 200 ($200): more usage than Plus, and "Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100." No Ultrafast.
  • Pro 500 ($500): "the highest included usage," which OpenAI's DevDay recap puts at "25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance," plus Ultrafast and the Agents API with computer use in Codex and ChatGPT Work (OpenAI).

OpenAI doesn't publish a multiple for Pro 100 or Pro 200. The "5x" and "10x" figures in reviews and on Reddit come from third parties and an OpenAI employee's post, not from OpenAI's pages.

The Pro 200 change: since 10 a.m. Pacific on September 29, 2026, new Pro 200 subscriptions get a lower allowance "to reflect our increasingly efficient models." Anyone with an active Pro 200 subscription between September 22 and that moment keeps the old allowance through October 29, 2026, at the same $200.

ChatGPT Plus vs Pro for Codex

Codex and ChatGPT Work share one allowance on every plan (OpenAI).

  • Plus: OpenAI describes it as enough to "power a few focused coding sessions each week." Its estimates per five hours: GPT-6 Astra 5 to 45 local messages, GPT-6.1 Sol 15 to 160, GPT-6 Sol 15 to 150, GPT-6 Luna 350 to 3,000. "Weekly limits may also apply."
  • Pro: "Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit," and Pro 100 and 200 get their full allowance for GPT-6 Astra, where Plus gets "limited Astra usage."
  • Cloud tasks count against the same allowance and may use more of it than local messages.
  • Speed costs allowance: Fast mode uses it 2.5 times as fast and Astra Ultrafast 8 times.

Past the allowance, both plans can buy credits that last 12 months. Personal Plus and Pro accounts can also pay to reset their limits early, which pulls next week's allowance forward rather than adding to it. Note that GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on October 14, 2026. How Codex compares with Anthropic's agent is in Claude Code vs Codex.

Which has more image generation?

Both use ChatGPT Images 2.5, released September 8, 2026. OpenAI publishes no image counts: Plus gets "more complex and accurate image creation," and Pro "unlimited and faster image creation," subject to abuse guardrails. Video is out of the picture on both: OpenAI closed the Sora app in April 2026 and the Sora API in September (OpenAI).

Is ChatGPT Pro worth it?

  • You hit Plus's limits now and then: stay on Plus and buy credits when you do.
  • You code with Codex most days, or keep running into the five-hour limit: Pro 100 is the cheapest plan without it.
  • You run long agent sessions all day, or want Ultrafast: Pro 500.

The same choice on Anthropic's side is in Claude Max vs Pro.

ChatGPT Plus or Pro vs Business

ChatGPT Business costs $20 a user a month billed annually or $25 monthly, for two or more people. Its standard seats get Plus's Codex estimates and 15 Pro messages a month; premium seats get five times the standard usage with no five-hour limit, 50 Pro messages a week and Dots. Business adds admin controls and keeps business data out of training by default, but has no Ultrafast. More in ChatGPT Business vs Enterprise.

Can you pay for Plus or Pro annually?

No. "Pro is billed monthly. Annual billing and payment for multiple months in advance are not available," and the same goes for Plus; only Business and Enterprise bill annually. OpenAI sets local prices in many countries.

Sharing one AI with your team

Plus and Pro are personal plans, and OpenAI prohibits sharing account credentials. For a group that wants to work with one AI together, Poly (usepoly.co) is a browser room where everyone sees each step live and any member can approve a change; it runs Codex and Claude Code. Free to start. What is Poly?
