How do you share a ChatGPT chat?

A shared ChatGPT link is a snapshot, and continuing it makes a private copy. Every way to share, and what each lets the other person do.

To share a ChatGPT chat, open it, choose Share and create a link. On personal plans anyone with the link can view a snapshot of the chat as it was when you made or last updated the link; on Business, Enterprise and Edu, only people in your workspace can open it, and the link can show messages added later. A person who continues a shared chat gets a separate, private conversation in their own account, and nothing they write reaches yours. To work in one place, ChatGPT's shared projects let up to 100 people see each other's chats and branch them, but no ChatGPT feature has put several people in one live conversation since group chats closed on July 9, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Personal links work for anyone with the link and show a snapshot; update the link to add new messages.
  • Workspace links (Business, Enterprise, Edu) open only inside your workspace and can include later messages. Enterprise and Edu admins can turn sharing off; Business admins can't.
  • Continuing a shared chat creates the recipient's own private copy.
  • Shared projects let collaborators see and branch each other's chats. Group chats are gone.

How do you share a ChatGPT chat?

  1. Open the chat and select Share. You can also share from the sidebar, or share a single response, which limits the link to that response.
  2. Review it, then create and copy the link. On a phone it opens the share sheet.
  3. To show messages you've added since, choose Share, then Update link.
  4. To delete links, open Settings, then Data controls, then Shared links, and choose Manage.

From OpenAI's help article on sharing conversations.

What can the other person do with it?

  • Read it: the chat history, supported images and uploaded files.
  • Continue it, privately. Continuing a shared chat creates a separate, private conversation in their own account and doesn't change yours.
  • Not see who made it, usually. Links are anonymous by default, though some older links show the creator's name.
  • Find it in search, in theory. OpenAI says shared pages aren't meant for search-engine indexing, but anyone with the link can view one.

There are no per-person permissions and no expiry dates, and deleting the original chat removes its link.

How do you share with your team?

  • Shared projects are on every plan, with up to 5 collaborators and 5 files on Free, 10 and 25 on Plus and Go, and 100 and 40 on Pro and workspace plans. Chat access lets members see and use the project's chats, files and instructions; Edit access lets them change instructions and files and invite others. Members see each other's chats and can branch one to continue it, and a shared project uses only project memory, never anyone's personal memory (OpenAI).
  • Pages in Space, since September 29, 2026, are documents people edit together and comment on, each person using their own ChatGPT. Space is on Pro, Business and Enterprise.
  • Teams in ChatGPT, on Business and Enterprise, share Pages, whole Spaces and team tasks with a fixed group of colleagues.

Can you share a ChatGPT chat as a PDF?

We found no option to download a chat as a PDF as of October 5, 2026; your browser's print to PDF works on an open chat. Deep research reports download as Markdown, Word or PDF, and a full data export arrives as a ZIP by email within up to 7 days on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, but not on Business or Enterprise (OpenAI).

Can you share a ChatGPT chat with Claude or Codex?

Not directly. There is no official way to move a ChatGPT chat into Codex or into Claude. OpenAI's import tools work the other way, bringing work in from Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Cursor, and Claude's import feature takes memories, not chats. Codex threads have their own sharing: from the Mac app, a thread becomes a read-only snapshot that people can view or attach to a new thread, but not continue. Codex sharing for teams is covered in Codex for teams.

Can several people talk to ChatGPT in one chat?

Not any more. ChatGPT group chats stopped accepting new chats on July 9, 2026 (what happened). Shared projects come closest, but each person still works in their own chat and branches others'. For one live conversation with an AI:

  • Poly (usepoly.co) is a browser room where several people talk to the same AI, GPT among five labs' models, and everyone sees each message as it happens. Free to start. What is Poly?
  • Poe's group chats hold up to 200 people and several AI bots.

More options are in How to group chat with AI and your friends. The same questions for Claude are answered in How to share a Claude chat.

Common questions

Can someone continue a ChatGPT chat I shared?

Yes, but in their own account. Continuing a shared chat creates a separate, private conversation for them, and nothing they write appears in yours.

Does a shared ChatGPT link update when I add messages?

On personal plans, no: the link is a snapshot until you choose Update link. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, a workspace link can include messages added after sharing.

Can I share a ChatGPT chat outside my company on Business?

No. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, only members of the same workspace can open a shared link; anyone else is told they don't have access.

Can two people use the same ChatGPT chat?

Not since ChatGPT group chats closed to new chats on July 9, 2026. Shared projects let people see and branch each other's chats, and tools such as Poly put several people and one AI in a shared room.
