Comparison
Claude Code vs the Claude desktop app vs Cowork
Three names for overlapping things. What each one is, where it runs, and which uses up your limits fastest.
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent; the Claude desktop app is a program that can run it; and Cowork is Claude's agent for non-coding work, which Anthropic has been folding into ordinary Claude conversations since September 16, 2026. In Anthropic's words, Claude Code "is built for software engineering" and Cowork "is built for non-coding knowledge work." The desktop app, for macOS, Windows and Linux (beta), runs Claude Code in its Code tab, and all of them draw on the same plan and the same usage limits.
Key takeaways
- Claude Code works in your repository: files, terminal, git and pull requests. The terminal version is the most complete.
- The desktop app is a free download. Its Code tab runs the same engine as the terminal, with visual diffs and parallel sessions, on paid plans.
- Cowork does multi-step knowledge work with your files, browser and connectors. Since October 6, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in the cloud.
- Usage across Claude, Claude Code and the desktop app counts toward one limit, and Claude Code and Cowork use it much faster than chat.
- All three are single-user. Anthropic's own table says only "Just you" sees the work.
| Claude chat | Cowork | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built for | Questions, writing, analysis | Non-coding knowledge work | Software engineering |
| Where | Web, desktop and phone | Desktop, web and phone; new Pro and Max tasks in the cloud | Terminal, IDE, desktop Code tab, web |
| Your files | Uploads only | Folders you choose | Your repository |
| Git and pull requests | No | No | Yes |
| Plans | Every plan, Free included | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise |
| Token use | Lower | Higher | Higher |
| Who sees the work | You, unless shared | Just you | Just you |
What is each one?
- Claude is the chat app on the web, desktop and phone, on every plan including Free.
- The Claude desktop app has Chat, Cowork and Code tabs (docs). The app is free; Claude Code and Cowork need Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise (download).
- Cowork launched as a research preview on January 12, 2026, became generally available on macOS and Windows on April 9, and reached the web and phones in July (release notes). It reads, edits and creates files in folders you choose, and can use a browser, connectors and plugins.
- Claude Code runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, in the desktop app's Code tab and on the web at claude.ai/code. It has no separate phone app: the Code tab in the Claude app connects to cloud sessions or your own machine (docs).
What changed on September 16, 2026?
Anthropic merged Cowork into Claude: "no mode to choose", and anything Cowork did is available from any conversation (Anthropic). The change is rolling out to Pro and Max first; Anthropic says Team and Free plans will follow, Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice, and an account that moves over can't switch back. Until then, Team and Enterprise organizations keep chat and Cowork as they are.
The Code tab doesn't change. And from October 6, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in the cloud; for work that must stay on your computer, Anthropic points to Claude Code in the desktop app (Anthropic).
Claude Code in the desktop app or the terminal?
- The desktop Code tab runs "the same underlying engine" with a graphical interface: parallel sessions in separate worktrees, visual diff review, pull request and CI monitoring, and local, cloud or SSH environments. It also loads the MCP servers you set up for Claude Desktop.
- The terminal is what Anthropic calls "the most complete surface": scripting and the Agent SDK are terminal-only (docs), and so are agent teams.
Anthropic's advice: use the desktop app to manage parallel sessions or review changes visually, and the terminal for scripting, automation or a terminal workflow. To bring your desktop MCP servers into the terminal, run claude mcp add-from-claude-desktop.
Which uses more tokens?
Claude Code and Cowork, by a wide margin. Anthropic's guide for Enterprise admins says both "consume tokens at a significantly higher rate than standard chat" (Anthropic), its Cowork page warns that Cowork "consumes limits faster than Chat," and the Claude Code docs say one debugging session "can consume more than a day of chat" (costs).
It all comes from one pool: usage of claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop "counts towards the same usage limit" (Anthropic). Anthropic also notes that tools and connectors are token-intensive, so a chat with many MCP tools costs more than a plain one. How the limits work: Claude Code usage limits.
How do MCP servers and connectors work in each?
- Chat: remote MCP connectors on every plan, though Free allows one custom connector; local MCP servers through desktop extensions.
- Cowork: connectors, skills and plugins on desktop, web and phone, but local MCP servers only through the desktop app, not in cloud tasks.
- Claude Code: MCP servers in
.mcp.jsonor~/.claude.json. Plugins saved to your account work across chat, Claude Code and Cowork.
Which should you use?
- Questions, writing and analysis: Claude chat.
- Research, documents and multi-step office work with your files or browser: Cowork, or the merged Claude.
- Code in a repository: Claude Code, in the terminal for scripting or in the desktop app for visual review.
- Work your whole team should see: none of the three. Anthropic's own comparison table answers "Who sees the work" with "Just you" for Cowork and Claude Code, and "Everyone in the channel" for Claude Tag in Slack (Anthropic).
What are OpenAI's equivalents?
OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app now combines Chat, Work and Codex in one app. ChatGPT Work brings the technology behind Codex into ChatGPT for longer tasks, much as Cowork does for Claude, and Codex itself runs in the terminal, the IDE and the cloud. Compared in Claude Code vs Codex.
When the work belongs to a team
For a team building software with one agent, Poly (usepoly.co) is a browser room where everyone works with the same Claude Code or Codex agent: each step is visible live, the agent asks before it acts, and any member can approve a change. Free to start. What is Poly?
Common questions
What is the difference between Claude Code and Claude desktop?
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. The Claude desktop app is a program for macOS, Windows and Linux that includes chat, Cowork and a Code tab running Claude Code with a graphical interface.
Is Claude Cowork the same as Claude Code?
No. Anthropic built Claude Code for software engineering and Cowork for non-coding knowledge work such as research and documents. They use the same agentic approach and share your plan's limits.
Do Claude Code and the Claude app share usage limits?
Yes. Usage of claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limit, and Claude Code and Cowork use it much faster than chat.
Does Claude Code use more tokens than Claude chat?
Yes. Anthropic says Claude Code and Cowork consume tokens at a significantly higher rate than standard chat, and that one debugging session can use more than a day of chat.
Can you use Claude Code on your phone?
Yes, through the Code tab in the Claude app, which connects to Claude Code sessions in the cloud or on your own computer. There is no separate Claude Code phone app.
