How to use Claude Code from Slack
Slack can start Claude Code's work, or Claude Code can read and post to Slack. Different setups, different plans.
There are two ways to put Claude Code and Slack together. To start coding work from Slack, mention @Claude in a channel: on Claude Team and Enterprise, Claude Tag runs the request in a cloud sandbox with the same engine as Claude Code on the web and usually opens a draft pull request, and on Pro and Max the older Claude Code in Slack does the same under your own account. To let Claude Code read and post to Slack from your terminal, install Slack's plugin with /plugin install slack, which connects Slack's official MCP server once a workspace admin approves it.
Key takeaways
- Slack to Claude Code: Claude Tag on Team and Enterprise, or Claude Code in Slack on Pro and Max.
- Claude Code to Slack: Slack's MCP server through its Claude Code plugin, or the claude.ai Slack connector on Team and Enterprise.
- Claude Tag's sessions belong to the whole thread, run without per-action permission prompts, and open pull requests as
claude[bot]. - Codex works from Slack through @ChatGPT on Business, Edu and Enterprise.
- Slack's own Slack Code opens code channels for Claude, Devin, Copilot and other agents.
| Option | Direction | Plans | Whose account runs it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Tag | Slack starts Claude Code work | Claude Team, Enterprise (beta) | The organization's balance |
| Claude Code in Slack | Slack starts Claude Code work | Claude Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise | Yours |
| Slack MCP plugin | Claude Code reads and posts to Slack | Any Claude Code user; Slack admin approval | Yours |
| claude.ai Slack connector | Claude and Claude Code read Slack | Claude Team, Enterprise | Yours |
| Codex via @ChatGPT | Slack starts Codex work | ChatGPT Business, Edu, Enterprise | Yours |
| Slack Code | A code channel around an agent | All Slack plans; agent may need a paid account | The agent's |
How do you start Claude Code work from a Slack channel?
On Team and Enterprise, use Claude Tag. Anthropic's Claude in Slack switched to Claude Tag on August 3, 2026, in public beta (Anthropic). When someone asks for code in a channel:
- Claude runs it in a cloud sandbox with the same engine as Claude Code on the web. It loads the repository's CLAUDE.md, rules and skills, but not its hooks or
.mcp.json(docs). - Name the repository in the first message. A session starts with nothing checked out.
- Claude pushes a branch or pull request, usually a draft pull request from the Claude GitHub App.
- The thread is shared. "Once a session is active in a thread, it belongs to everyone there," and anyone can steer it (docs).
Setup needs a Claude Owner, a Slack workspace admin and a GitHub organization owner who is also a Claude Owner, to install the Claude GitHub App. An Owner then grants repositories per workspace or channel (GitHub access). Channel work draws on the organization's usage balance under a spend limit rather than anyone's seat, and Claude Tag isn't available to organizations with zero data retention or customer-managed keys.
On Pro and Max, use Claude Code in Slack. The earlier integration, from December 2025, runs each request as a Claude Code session on the web under your own account, your connected repositories and your plan's limits, in channels only (docs).

How do you connect Slack to Claude Code?
Slack runs an official MCP server, generally available since February 17, 2026, that lets an AI search and read channels, threads and files and post messages (Slack). To add it to Claude Code:
- Ask a Slack workspace admin to approve the MCP integration.
- In Claude Code, run
/plugin install slack, orclaude plugin install slackfrom your shell. - Sign in to Slack when the OAuth prompt opens (Slack).
The plugin also adds Slack skills such as Block Kit and search. A plain claude mcp add with Slack's URL isn't documented: Slack doesn't support dynamic client registration, so the client has to be a registered Slack app, which the plugin provides.
On Team and Enterprise, there is a second route: an Owner turns on the claude.ai Slack connector, each member connects, and Claude Code picks it up automatically when signed in with that account (docs).
Can Claude Code send Slack notifications?
Yes, with a hook. A Notification hook fires when Claude Code needs your permission or is waiting for input, and a command hook can post to a Slack incoming webhook with curl. Anthropic's Agent SDK docs include a worked example that forwards notifications to Slack (docs). Claude Code's own mobile push notifications come through Remote Control.
How does Codex work in Slack?
Mention @ChatGPT; it replaced @Codex once an admin enables the ChatGPT app. Repository work "runs in a separate task using your account", in a cloud environment shared with the workspace (OpenAI). OpenAI lists it for Business, Edu and Enterprise. Unlike a Claude Tag thread, following along doesn't give other channel members access to the task. More in Codex for teams.
What other coding agents work in Slack?
- Slack Code, from Slack since August 20, 2026, opens a temporary code channel around a supported agent. Its list includes Claude, CodeRabbit, Devin, Factory, GitHub Copilot, Lovable, Replit and Vercel. It's available on all Slack plans with a supported agent installed, and some agents need a paid account (Slack).
- Cursor: mention @cursor to start a Cloud Agent, which reads the whole thread (Cursor).
- Devin: mention @Devin; it can move work into a dedicated code channel (Devin).
What should you know about security?
- Claude Tag reads every top-level message in its channels, and the replies in their threads, tagged or not (docs).
- It acts without asking. Sessions run in auto mode with no per-action permission prompts; review happens on the pull request. How other agents handle approvals is in Who approves a coding agent's changes?
- Pull requests come from
claude[bot], so GitHub's rule against approving your own pull request doesn't stop the person who asked from approving Claude's. Anthropic suggests requiring two reviews. - During the beta there is no automatic retention period for Claude Tag transcripts and memory (docs).
- Credentials stay out of the sandbox, and outbound traffic is denied by default.
When Slack isn't the right room
Slack is good for handing off a task and getting a pull request back. When a team wants to decide each step together, Poly (usepoly.co) is a browser room built for one coding agent and a group: everyone sees the conversation live, the agent asks before it acts, any member can approve or undo a change, and the team has a side chat the AI never reads. It runs Claude Code and Codex. Free to start. Compared in detail: Poly vs Claude Tag and Poly vs Slack Code.
Common questions
Can you use Claude Code from Slack?
Yes. On Claude Team and Enterprise, mention @Claude in a channel and Claude Tag runs the request in a cloud sandbox and opens a pull request. On Pro and Max, Claude Code in Slack runs it under your own account.
How do you connect Slack to Claude Code?
Install Slack's plugin with /plugin install slack, which connects Slack's official MCP server after a workspace admin approves it. On Team and Enterprise, the claude.ai Slack connector also works in Claude Code.
Is there an official Slack MCP server?
Yes. Slack's MCP server has been generally available since February 17, 2026. It needs a registered Slack app as the client, which Slack's Claude Code plugin provides.
Does Codex work in Slack?
Yes. Mention @ChatGPT, which replaced @Codex, and repository work runs as a separate Codex task under your account. OpenAI lists it for Business, Edu and Enterprise.
Does Claude Tag ask before changing code?
No. Claude Tag sessions run in auto mode without per-action permission prompts. The check comes at the pull request, which Anthropic suggests protecting with two required reviews.
