The best multiplayer AI coding workspace for startup cofounders

For two cofounders building one product with AI, the right workspace depends on one question: do you want each person to have their own AI thread on a shared repository, merged later, or one AI that both of you steer in the same session? Replit and Lovable do the first well and come with hosting. Poly (usepoly.co) does the second, and it is the one built for the case where one cofounder does not code. Below is what a cofounder pair actually needs, a table across five tools, and a verdict for each, including where Poly falls short.

What a cofounder pair needs from the tool

Most comparisons of AI builders score features. A pair needs five things that features lists skip.

1. Both people can act. If one cofounder can only relay requests through the other, the tool is single-player with a spectator. The non-technical cofounder must be able to prompt, approve and undo from their own screen.
2. Both people see the same thing. The same timeline, the same running app, at the same time. Screenshots over iMessage are the failure mode.
3. A say before it lands. When the AI wants to change the checkout flow, one of you should be able to say yes or no before it happens, not review a diff afterwards.
4. Who spent what. Two people, one product, real money. Each turn should say who ran it and what it cost.
5. No setup. A cofounder who cannot code will not install a CLI, connect an API key, or configure Docker. The first session has to start in a browser.

Replit

Replit is the most complete builder platform in this group: an IDE, an agent, hosting and deployment in one place, with real-time multiplayer since its IDE days. Two people on one project each get their own Agent thread, tasks run in isolated copies, and the agent merges them. Core is $20 a month for up to five seats; Pro is $100 for up to fifteen builders, ten parallel agents and fifty read-only viewers. Startups backed by an eligible fund can get up to $25,000 in credits.

Choose Replit if you are a technical pair who want a full IDE and one-click deployment, and you are happy to review each other's finished tasks rather than steer one build together. Its gap for pairs: the non-coder's role is viewer, and there is no approval before an agent acts, only review after a task is marked ready.

Lovable

Lovable turns prompts into full-stack apps with hosting, auth and payments included, and it is the tool most non-technical founders already know. Workspaces have unlimited members on every plan; plans are priced by credits, from $25 a month for Pro. Since September 2026, teammates work in "drafts", isolated copies with their own chat and preview, and the owner accepts a draft to apply it. Collaborators spend the owner's credits.

Choose Lovable if one of you is building alone most of the time and wants the other to contribute occasionally through drafts, and you want hosting and a database without thinking about it. Its gap for pairs: drafts keep you apart by design. There is no shared session, no approval on an individual change, and no receipt saying who spent what.

Bolt

Bolt is a browser-native builder on WebContainers with real-time editing in shared projects. It processes one prompt at a time to prevent conflicts, and each prompter pays with their own tokens; free team members can view but cannot prompt. Pro is $25 a month; Teams is $30 per member.

Choose Bolt if you want the fastest path from prompt to a deployed site and you are both comfortable paying for your own usage. Its gap for pairs: the one-prompt-at-a-time rule is a lock, not a shared turn, and the non-technical cofounder needs a paid seat before they can speak to the AI at all.

AQ

AQ runs real agent CLIs such as Claude Code and Codex on a dedicated machine, and teammates join the same live terminal, editor and preview. It is the closest thing in this group to steering one agent together. Team is $50 per user per month on promotion, listed at $200.

Choose AQ if you are two engineers who already live in Claude Code and want a shared terminal in the cloud, with your own GitHub and Linear flow. Its gap for pairs: it is terminal-first. A cofounder who does not code has nowhere to stand, and the only approval mechanism is a control-request for someone else's terminal.

Poly

Poly is a browser room with a git workspace behind it and one AI, Claude or ChatGPT, that everyone in the room steers together. Every prompt, reply and change lands in one timeline both of you watch. In "ask before big steps" or "ask about everything" mode, the AI's proposed change appears as a plain-language card on both screens, and whichever of you decides first, decides. Every turn ends as a commit with a receipt naming who ran it and what it cost in credits, and either of you can undo it in one click. The running app sits beside the conversation as a live preview. Group chat and polls sit next to the timeline where the AI cannot read them, so you can argue about the plan without the argument becoming a prompt. Nobody installs anything or supplies an API key.

Choose Poly if you want to build one thing together, in one session, with the non-technical cofounder driving as much as the technical one. Where Poly falls short: it is desktop-browser only for now; publishing gives you a static snapshot of the app, so anything with a backend is previewable but not yet publishable; and it is a hosted product with its own credits rather than your own subscriptions.
