# ChatGPT Business vs Enterprise: what you get for the price

Same models, same collaboration features. The difference is how you pay, how many people you can add and what your security team can control.

**ChatGPT Business is OpenAI's self-serve plan for teams: standard seats cost $20 a month billed annually or $25 monthly, premium seats $100 or $125, paid by card, for 2 to 200 seats. ChatGPT Enterprise is sold through OpenAI's sales team at custom prices, billed from a shared credit pool or by the token, and adds the controls large organizations need: SCIM, custom data retention, data residency in ten regions, encryption keys you manage, a compliance API, IP allowlisting and, for sales-managed accounts, a HIPAA business associate agreement. Neither trains on your data by default.**

## Key takeaways

- Business is self-serve: card payment, 2 to 200 seats, single sign-on included, standard and premium seats mixed as you like.
- Enterprise has no published price. It is billed either from a shared credit pool with no per-seat caps or by the token alongside seat fees, invoiced monthly.
- Business lacks SCIM, custom retention, data residency, managed encryption keys, the compliance API, IP allowlisting and a HIPAA agreement.
- Both include Codex and ChatGPT Work, shared projects, Teams in ChatGPT and @ChatGPT in Slack and Microsoft Teams.
- Custom GPTs retire on December 11, 2026 on every plan.

## How much does ChatGPT Business cost?

- **Standard seats:** $20 a month billed annually, $25 monthly.
- **Premium seats:** $100 or $125, with five times the Work and Codex usage, no five-hour limit and 50 Pro messages a week, against 15 a month on standard.
- **Seats:** at least two, of either type, and up to 200 for workspaces created since August 24, 2026. OpenAI's support team can't raise the limit and points larger organizations to Enterprise ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8792536)).
- **Payment:** by card. Invoicing needs a contracted plan such as Enterprise.

Owners can also buy credits for usage beyond the seats' allowances. Codex for a team is covered in detail in [Codex for teams](/codex-for-teams).

## How is ChatGPT Enterprise priced?

OpenAI lists Enterprise as custom pricing through sales, with two ways to pay:

- **Credits:** the workspace buys a shared credit pool, and everyone draws from it. There are "no per-seat usage caps by default"; admins set spend controls by group, and added seats are reconciled in quarterly true-ups ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11487671)).
- **Tokens:** usage is billed by the token at OpenAI's rate card and invoiced monthly in arrears with any contracted seat fees ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001520)). Under this option even Instant chat is billable. It isn't offered for Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare.

OpenAI publishes no Enterprise seat price and no minimum seat count; estimates elsewhere are guesses. Enterprise also brings 24/7 priority support, service-level agreements, custom legal terms and an account team.

## What does Enterprise add for security and privacy?

From OpenAI's plan comparison ([OpenAI](https://chatgpt.com/pricing?type=team)):

- **Identity:** SCIM provisioning and role-based access control. Both plans have single sign-on and domain verification.
- **Data:** custom retention policies, and data residency in ten regions: the US, EU, UK, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Singapore, India, Australia and the UAE.
- **Encryption:** enterprise key management, so you hold the keys.
- **Oversight:** the Compliance API and logs, an analytics dashboard and IP allowlisting.
- **Health data:** OpenAI says it does "not offer a BAA for ChatGPT Business"; sales-managed Enterprise and Edu accounts can get one ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8660679)).

Both plans keep business data out of model training by default.

## How do models and limits differ?

- **Business chat** runs GPT-5.6 Sol at each reasoning level, with GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, as the Pro option. "Virtually unlimited" applies to Instant only ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12003714)).
- **GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna** are models for ChatGPT Work and Codex, not chat, on both plans.
- **Enterprise** offers "virtually unlimited messages for eligible base models," and credit-based workspaces have no fixed rate limits. New models start switched off until an admin enables them ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11165333)).
- **Context:** Instant chat holds 54K tokens on Business and 128K on Enterprise; reasoning holds 256K on both.

## What do both plans share?

- No training on business data by default, and SOC 2 Type 2.
- Codex and ChatGPT Work in every seat.
- Shared projects of up to 100 collaborators and 40 files ([ChatGPT shared projects](/chatgpt-shared-projects)).
- Teams in ChatGPT, Space and Pages, added September 29, 2026.
- @ChatGPT in Slack and Microsoft Teams, where teammates can join in without their own ChatGPT license.
- Custom GPTs retire on December 11, 2026, replaced by plugins. Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral have until February 11, 2027 ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001519)).

## Which should you choose?

- **Fewer than 200 people, no regulated data, and a card is fine:** Business.
- **You need SCIM, custom retention, data residency, a HIPAA agreement or invoicing:** Enterprise.
- **More than 200 seats:** Enterprise.
- **A few heavy Codex users:** premium Business seats for them, standard for everyone else.

## How does it compare with Claude?

Claude Team is the counterpart to Business: 2 to 150 seats, standard at $20 billed annually or $25 monthly and premium at $100 or $125. Claude Enterprise is $20 a seat plus all usage at API rates, from 20 seats self-serve or 50 through sales ([Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/9797531)). ChatGPT's token-based Enterprise option now works much like Claude Enterprise, except that OpenAI doesn't publish the seat price.
